The downfall of the horror genre

I was flicking through Netflix the other night and as I always do I went straight to the horror category. I truly was horrified when I was met with B movie crap after B movie crap! It was infuriating. Directors these days are just going for cheap thrills and as much as I enjoy the gore there is absolutely no thought going into horror stories these days. With bullshit movies like Sharknado and Pirhanna 3DD scraping up a following it has unleashed a new generation of talent-less would-be directors and writers.

I’m not claiming to the almighty ruling on this subject. I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who would rubbish a lot of the movies I like. I’m not a purist by any means but it is worrying that the horror genre is a joke. Most of the recent releases in the genre are cliche after cliche with some random shock factor thrown in to try and make it ‘cutting  edge’. This goes mostly for Hollywood because European and Asian cinema has fresh stories to add.

It is really sad to see because as a horror fan I would like nothing more to see that it can be just as emotional as drama, as effective as comedy and as well written as any Oscor nominated movie if only the directors and writers were willing to step away from the trash that’s being churned out and try.

Anyway, that’s just my thoughts.
